A lesson in PokePages History

Tue May 12, 2009, 10:14 PM
So in my last journal I Reminisced about Gold and Silver and seeing the new Pokemon. I talked with several of you and it seems like many of us have fond memories about the second generation.

I first got my taste of Johto in the form of trading cards from japan I bought from a comic book store. I would unwrap a pack of cards and see Pokemon I had never seen before...

I still have those cards, they live in my bottom drawer under some old magazines. (Sorry about the crappy photo quality).

This was my baby. Opening a pack and seeing this Holographic Pichu card was the first time I had seen Pichu and I was completely dumbfounded. I showed it off so much, but never traded it, NO MATTER HOW MANY RATTATAS YOU OFFERED! The idea of pre-evolution confused me at first, but it was so cute.

I got this magazine later. It shows all the images of the second generation. I still have it, and will never let it go.

I used to gaze at these pages for hours, amazed at what I was seeing. The types are wrong in some cases and the names are in japanese except for Umbreon who is called "blackie". Cellebi is a cheap drawing done by someone who based the drawing off the sprite. There are even little check marks next to the Pokemon I caught when I eventually bought the game.

I've gotten so excited about HeartGold and SoulSilver, I realized how much I loved the Johto Pokemon! I just love all the new ideas brought with Gold/Silver: Eggs, Day/Night, New types, New region, New evolutions/Prevolutions, and the whole idea of NEW pokemon. I am a little unhappy with the new Trainer designs. I liked the original 'silver' character better than the new one.

Maybe this isn't interesting to anyone but me, but this was the time when I really came enthralled with Pokemon.

I'm trying a new pokedex background, but I'm not completely happy with this version. I just wanted to post it and see what you guys think.

GoldSilver

I always get excited to see new official Sugimori Artwork. I'm interested in seeing what the shading looks like, as it changes from generation to generation. I'll have to revamp my own style. I love the original Gold/Silver and I'm excited to see what HeartGold and SoulSilver are going to be like!

Totodile is my pick, but I also love Bayleef and Typhlosion. I remember when I was a little boy, flipping through the channels and on the Home Shopping Network they were selling Pokemon cards of Pokemon I had never seen before (This of course was before everything was instantly revealed on the internet, or at least before I knew much about computers). The cards were of Chikorita, Totodile, and Cyndaquil, along with their evolutions. I was sooo excited because this was the first time the idea of NEW POKEMON had really crossed my mind. After that I would buy imported japanese 2nd gen. Pokemon cards at a comic book store near my house. Opening a pack and seeing brand new Pokemon I had never seen before was the best. Much more fun than going online and hearing speculation for months then finally getting to see low quality scans a year before you even get to buy the game. Gold and Silver brought new advancements like the day and night feature. Being a kid, the world of Pokemon seemed endless.

I'll probably make something new before too long. Thanks to those of you who have stuck around, and those of you who have only recently added me to your watch list :)
